A Word from the Principal…
Our senior students have listened to Defence Force presentations, Career Awareness in Community and Disability services, and Arbre Forestry Industry sessions, the latter using two simulators to replicate machinery used in the industry. These sessions provide students with a greater understanding and awareness of the different career pathways these sectors can offer job seekers.
With the Year 11/12 students finishing next week it was great to hear the off-campus day trip was well supported by the students and proved to be an enjoyable day out. The Year 11/12 Celebration Dinner is on Friday 18th of November. Please contact the school for more details about the dinner should you need it.
All students have been participating in PAT testing which focuses on Maths, Reading and Writing. We use the results to look at growth over a 12-month period. Ideally, we want every student to be showing growth in their results across all the areas. Teachers are speaking with their students about their results, and they will use the data to help inform their planning, learning adjustments and learning outcomes for the rest of the year and into 2023. Enjoy the rest of the newsletter!

End of year reports
A reminder to families that end of year reports will be distributed by Friday 16th December.
The report will show your child’s learning achievement on a 9-point visual scale which replaces A-E ratings for students in Prep to Year 10.
The 9-point scale shows more specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
There will be no teacher comments on the report.
For more information about the changes to reports:

Libraries Tasmania
The school now has access to FREE eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, comics, graphic novels and more. Download the Sora app and ask your teacher or school library staff to help you get started today.

Big Bash On The North-West Coast
Students in the Year 7 Extended Health and Physical Education class are looking forward to watching a live professional WBBL T20 cricket match on 15th November. The Hobart Hurricanes are hosting the Melbourne Stars at Latrobe Recreation Ground on the Tuesday afternoon, and the extension elective is taking advantage of the rare opportunity to experience professional cricket on the north coast.
The Tasmanian Rock Challenge
The Tasmanian Rock Challenge is an annual competition, which favours original composition. Smithton High School band, Smithrock took to the stage for the first North-West heat in Burnie, at the Menai. The band performed their original song “Dark Clouds” themed around the idea of rain, a concept derived from topics about home. Their second song was a cover of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated”. Smithrock made it all the way to the finals in Launceston, battling other schools in their section from the Southern and Northern heats.
“I am so happy for you guys, you worked extremely hard together to get the songs to the standard you did. I hope you all continue to play and explore your musicianship beyond this experience, rock on Smithrock!” -Dani Quilliam
Smithrock band members:
Tori (guitarist), Shayla (lead vocalist), Elijah (vocalist), Chloe (bassist) and Ezra (drums)
“Getting to perform on a professional stage was an amazing opportunity.” - Tori
“Collaborating and writing a song with the band was fun, I’ll never forget watching the audience dance to our music.” - Shayla
“I loved meeting all the professional stage technicians that helped us set up on stage, they are really good at their job.” - Chloe

Work Placement
The Year 9/10 Work Placement classes were very lucky to visit and have a tour of the potato processing part of the McCain Foods Plant. The tour was fantastic and the students came away with not only an appreciation of the humble chip but what goes into the process and the occupations that are needed to operate the plant. We can’t thank the staff enough for their generosity of time, enthusiasm and making us feel very welcome. The group was very grateful and appreciative of the experience.
