A Word from the Principal…

Tuesday we had our end of term assembly where the school acknowledged and congratulated students on the Student Executive Council, Student Representative Council (7-9), House and Vice House Captains and Peer Support Leaders. We also listened to three musical performances from Shayla, Ebony, Ezra, Hollie and Dudley. They keep getting better and better!

Formally recognising our student leaders is important because they play a huge role in our school and within our community. It’s important for our student body to know who their student leaders are and what’s going on in our school. Every student can speak to our student leaders about things they would like to see happen in our school or if they have noticed things that need to be better.

When we are given opportunities to lead or be involved in decision making processes, it empowers and engages us, and it allows us to get better at doing things.

Miss Wilson will be working with the Student Engagement team - this is a student voice group that aims to have reps from each grade and the team provides suggestions and feedback in school matters. If you’d like to be involved let Miss Wilson know early next term. If you have something constructive to say, touch base with your student leaders or join the Student Engagement team.

Wednesday was a free dress day (last day of term) and in period 5 and 6 we watched the House Basketball Comp (this replaced the student and staff competition). It was a great afternoon, and of course it was very competitive. Well done to everybody who played, organised or barracked from the side lines.

The 25th of April is ANZAC day and our school will be marching in the parade at Anzac Park in Smithton. If you would like to be involved come dressed in full school uniform, the meeting place is outside the Reject Shop at 10am. See you there!

Have a great break and Happy Easter!

2023 SEC Report

This term we have started some major projects such as electing the Year 7, 8, 9 SRC which we have changed up a little, with there now being a combined Year 8, 9 group. We think that this is a great way to have these two grades working together while also having a stand-alone Year 7 SRC and Year 10 SEC.

Other than organising the SRC electee’s, which involves an application and interview process, one of the first events that we did this year was hold a BBQ on Athletics Carnival day to raise money for Cancer Council. We also sold Zooper Doopers which proved to be very popular. We would like to say a big thank you to Margret from IGA, Ms Wilson and Jenna and Popeye from Cottage Kitchen Bakery for making donations towards the BBQ. We were able to raise $350 to support this worthy cause.

We also had an Easter Raffle which was drawn the last day of term. The winner received a basket of Easter goodies. These funds were also donated to the Cancer Council. On the last day of term, we held a free dress day with students bringing a gold coin donation. We have also started smaller projects during this term which you will get to see later throughout the year. We are looking forward to the rest of the year and can’t wait to see the opportunities that come with it. On behalf of the SEC we would like to wish all staff and students a safe and restful break and hope that you come back recharged and ready to go for Term 2.

By; Gabbie & Brielle.

Congratulations to all the SEC members on representing Smithton High School. Please check out their profiles to learn more about our school leaders.

Athletics Carnival

In week 6 of the term, we held our Athletics Carnival here at the school. Well done to all students who participated and tried their best. With some events still to be finalised in PE lessons, we unfortunately don’t have a winning house or the track and field champions. These will be announced during the next assembly in Term 2. We can say it is a very close race between Robbins & Perkins. Who will be crowned champion house?

Please enjoy some of the photos taken from the day. Thankyou to the PE staff for their hard work in organising the carnival.

Paddock to Plate

Paddock to Plate is humming along for Years 9 and 10. Students are enjoying the fresh produce from the gardens and being active in caring for the animals. Students have been working through units on hand tools, applying their knowledge in the garden and our farm infrastructure.

Our sheep were in need to have their hooves clipped. Working through animal handling and safety, students completed this task with care and precision.

Year 9 and 10 Work Placement

This year some of our Year 9/10 students have participated in our school Work Placement elective. The elective is only running for Term 1 and 2 but we have been very busy visiting businesses in Circular Head to find out what jobs/careers there are in the area e.g. Grange Resources - Port Latta, CHAC, Britton Timbers. Students have also been provided with information about resumes and tax file numbers. Some of our students have started placements in areas of interest, which we greatly appreciate the support of Circular Head businesses. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students and we look forward to updating our school community on our students learning journey in this space.

Lisa Bryan and Andrea Wilson - Work Placement teachers.

Woodwork Creations

Our Year 9/10 Woodwork classes and our mentor groups have been busy this term making a variety of things. They have made hardwood coffee tables, sliding top boxes, garden trowels and Huon Pine coasters in a box. Excellent work by everyone involved.

ABSTUDY

We’d like to ensure families know about how ABSTUDY can help support high school students. This includes families whose children are living at home and may not know they’re eligible. When students live at home, eligible families can get support with school fees and school materials like uniforms, textbooks and stationery.

It’s not too late to claim ABSTUDY support for the 2023 school year. : ABSTUDY for students living away from home

You can download the ABSTUDY high school eKit from our website and both:

  • print or share by email the ABSTUDY payments when students live at home factsheet
