A Word from the Principal…
Hello everyone,
Here are some updates and important news for you all.
We are so proud of our students for following our school values of LEARN, ACHIEVE, RESPECT, FAIRNESS. Students have been recognised in year assemblies for their achievements and you can read about those students further in the newsletter. Let’s keep up the great work!
Our teachers are dedicated to improving their practice by focusing on building positive relationships with students during our meeting times. This work will help create a supportive and engaging learning environment for everyone.
Our students have been busy getting out and about. The Work Placement class have been visiting local industries. The Outdoor Ed students have participated in orienteering activities in the community; while students and Youth Mentors have built and installed new swings in the Bee Garden to help with student well-being. Our school football team has kicked off to a great start with three wins under their belt. Go team! While the SEC and SRC have been busy delivering grazing boxes this week for the Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser in support of the Cancer Council. Finally, our students have participated in the Cross-Country event during PE lessons this week. Well done to all the runners!
Important Reminders:
Year 7 - please remember to hand in your mobile phones.
Year 7-12 - let's continue to focus on building respectful relationships with one another.
Year 9 - let's focus on getting to classes on time and working on our Passion Projects.
Year 10 - keep updating your transition plans and get ready for the Hellyer taster day.
Year 8 - keep building that strong class culture together.
Thank you all for your hard work and commitment to learning and growing at Smithton High and let's continue to support each other in our educational journey.
Warm regards,
Nikki Clark

Pastoral Care Assembly
During Pastoral Care, Year 7s have been holding assemblies to recognise the success of students who continue to display our school values. Congratulations to all students who have received awards so far.
Visiting the Trade Training Centre
The Year 7 cohort recently visited the Circular Head Trade Training Centre for a tour.
First, they had a safety briefing, then the tour began. Students were taken through the Construction workshop, Mechanical Studies workshop and the Auto/Engineering workshop.
Students finished our tour at the Rustic Duck Café where they enjoyed a mini muffin and a fruit box. Thank you Sharalyn for organising this fabulous experience.
Year 8 Assembly
Congratulations to all Year 8 students who have been recognised in assemblies during Pastoral Care for Term 2. Work Placement
AG Warehouse
The Year 9/10 Work-placement class travelled to Nelson Street to learn about the job opportunities at AG Warehouse. Kanon Lockett, the Manager, gave us an insight of his career pathway that has led him to his current job. The students were intrigued about the importance of Agri businesses that service our community and the vast contribution to our local economy. We thank Kanon for his time.
Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council
Kiah from Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council came to present to the Year 9/10 Work Placement class. Kiah spoke about the variety of manufacturing jobs available, employment opportunities and how to make networks and connections into this career. Students then had to manufacture their own wind propelled car, made out of Lego and a balloon. We thank Kiah for his time and knowledge in today’s session.
Grange Resources- Port Latta
On Wednesday the 15th and 22nd May, the Year 9/10 Work Placement class went on a work exposure excursion to Grange Resources, Port Latta. Tristan Hanson went through the process of how the iron ore travels through the pipe line from Savage River in the form of slurry and is then dehydrated and made into pellets to be exported to multiple countries. The students were fascinated to see the ins and outs of the working mill. Tristan also spoke about the amazing work placements and apprenticeships that Grange Resource offer at Port Latta every year. We thank Tristan and the employees for allowing us on this workplace tour.
School Football
Smithton High School’s 9/10 boys football team have been playing really well and have chalked up three wins and one loss so far in the roster. Our recent game against Burnie High School and was played in good spirits and injury free. Thanks to those that came out to support.
More information on a school girls football roster will be provided shortly.
Reset Room
The reset room has now begun to branch outdoors with the installation of the swing into the space. Students from across the school have helped in all aspects of the construction of the swing from the measurements for the safety requirements, digging of the holes, making and pouring of concrete and finally the ever-important testing. It’s great to hear laughter as students use this tool to self-regulate as we begin to landscape and complete the regulation space.
Outdoor Education
The Outdoor Ed students were carrying out an orienteering activity around town last week. The students were using compasses and cardinal points to navigate and find their way.
Relay for Life
Staff and students had a great time on the last day of Term 1 during Pastoral Care for the school Relay for Life. Thank-you to the SEC & Mrs Bishop for organising it all. Thank-you also to everyone for their gold coin donations & for purchasing the Zooper Doopers. We managed to raise over $360 which will go towards the Cancer Council.
CHAC Group
Our TIDDAS group recently had a wonderful morning exploring Kennaook (Cape Grim). The girls showed great resilience participating in a walk to the base of Kennaook, where they explored the cave and listened to the cultural history of the area. We thank Camilla, Kelsie and Tess from CHAC for the great experience.
