A Word from the Principal…
Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,
I hope this newsletter finds you well! As we wrap up another exciting term at Smithton High School, I'm delighted to share some of the fantastic events and activities that have taken place.
Work on adding some additional features to the under covered area near the oval will start during the holidays. We secured funding through DECYP’s Outdoor Learning Space funding program to support the construction work required to make this space more accessible. Late July should also see work begin on installing suitable playground equipment for our students supported by the Tasmania Community Fund grant we secured last year. I’m positive that our updated under cover space and playground equipment will be a hit with the students. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen!
We've installed a new swing in the Bee Garden! Hopefully you saw the photos on Facebook. Mentor groups are actively working in the bee garden, creating a sensory space for both students and staff. This involves the construction of a new pond, landscape design features including plants that will help regulation strategies through sensory methods.
We've celebrated student effort, achievement and growth through regular assemblies for Years 7-10. It's been wonderful to see so many students recognised for their hard work this term. Congratulations to the Year 9/10 Football team who made it to the semi-final where they played Reece High School. The game didn’t go our way, but the team has had an outstanding season. Thanks to Mr Coombe, Mr Billing, Jordan and Zavier for coaching, umpiring and organising the team each week.
The mentor cooking program has been fantastic, with students getting hands-on experience in planning, budgeting, cooking and marketing food to sell to staff and students each week. Delicious!
The SEC/SRC fundraising and charity support has included Beanie Day and making and selling morning tea boxes to raise funds and awareness for various causes. Well done to our Student Leaders.
Shout out to Mrs Bishop and 7.2 who have worked extremely hard making gratitude gifts for our staff - it’s such a lovely way to show their appreciation. Thank you!
Mrs Bryan, Kylie and Sharalyn continue to organise visits for the 9/10 Work Placement elective to local businesses and industries in our region such as Grange Resources - Savage River and Port Latta sites, SWIRL and the Bridge Hotel. This elective gives students valuable insight into real-world work experiences in our community. Big thanks to the staff and our local businesses and industries for accommodating our students during these site visits.
Years 8 and 9 participated in the Seven Up ‘Alcohol and Drugs Lifestyle Event’ where they learnt important lifestyle tips regarding alcohol and drugs. Speak Up Stay Chatty - Year 9 students participated in this important mental health initiative. YFCC Collaboration with SHS - YFCC has been providing our year groups with crucial information on issues like vaping, energy drinks, mental health, e-safety, alcohol, and drugs.
We had three students finish in the top 20 for their age groups in the Inter High Cross Country events. Amazing effort to Maya, Aihden and Bonn.
The Rustic Duck Cafe is open every Thursday, 10am -2pm. Pop in for some delicious food!
Congratulations to Miss Field and the Years 7-9 Drama students on their outstanding performances at the Burnie Eisteddfod. Well done to Milly, Tilly, Blayze and Lucas who won their drama sections.
The Ag class enjoyed a tour of University of Tasmania campus in Burnie, exploring pathways in agriculture. It was a great day and it really opened up a lot of possibilities for our students, particularly those who are interested in career pathways in agriculture. Thanks Mrs Thompson for your support.
Staff achievements:
Well done to Erica Quinn who passed her final placement at SHS. Erica is working at our school as part of the TIPP program, and we look forward to her continuing her role for the rest of the year.
Staff have been working together to improve their practice by participating in weekly Professional Learning Sessions that focus on building relationships and classroom management practices. They are putting this knowledge into practice in their PLTs where they focus on an inquiry cycle approach where they use the best evidence-based practices to implement in their own classrooms.
Don’t forget Parent-Teacher interviews for Years 7-12 will run again in Term 3, Week 1 on Monday-Thursday.
The Gratitude Box initiative recognises staff for the great work they do every day. Staff nominate other staff by using a gratitude slip and placing it in the Gratitude Box. Every Monday and Wednesday there’s a draw and the winning staff get to choose something from the box. Thanks Wils for setting this up for staff!
Staff are using TEAMS as the main platform for communication in our school. The take up has been nothing but extraordinary. Well done everyone!
Lastly, for any inquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact us at Smithton High School on 64529222.
Warm regards,
Nikki Clark
Principal
Year 7 News
Our Year 7s have been busy this term. During Pastoral Care they have been holding their assemblies to recognise students who have been displaying our school values of LARF (Learn, Achieve, Respect & Fairness). Well done to everyone who have received certificates.
MDT
7.2 have been busy in MDT. Look at their great chopping boards and garden trowels. Excellent woodwork skills!
YFCC Visits
The Year 7s have also had visits from Jonathan at YFCC. He has shared information about the dangers of energy drinks, smoking, vaping, and information around Mental Health. Thank you for your time Jonathon.
Year 8 news
Congratulations to our Year 8 award recipients.

We worked in small groups to explore eSafety and the risks related to drugs and other illegal substances.
Thanks to Jonathan from YFCC for sharing your time and expertise with us!
Art Work
Year 8s have been working hard in their art lessons.
Year 9 News
Congratulations to our Year 9 award recipients.

Year 10 English
Please read the fantastic stories some of our Year 10 students have completed in English this term.
Healthy Lifestyle Event
During Pastoral Care, Years 8 and 9 students attended the ‘Alcohol, Drugs and Healthy Lifestyles Event’ run by Seven Up.
20 different organisations came together to support our students.
A panel of guest speakers shared their experiences, including a variety of different service providers.
It was a great day out and the students came away with lots of information and a heap of freebies too.
Work Placement
SWIRL
The 9/10 Work Placement class visited SWIRL to do a workplace tour. Sam, Zarlia and Sarah spoke to the students about the various job opportunities within the Aquatic Industry. We thank SWIRL for giving up their time and showing the students around the facility.
Agriculture Studies
A selection of Year 9/10 students ventured to TIA Research Farm and the Cradle Coast Uni campus in week 7. Students had an opportunity to see firsthand the technology and dairy processes on the farm. At the Cradle Coast University site, students had a tour of the campus and received information around courses entry into university. Thank you UTAS for facilitating this opportunity.
Inter High Cross Country
Well done to the students who recently represented Smithton High School, competing against other high schools across the coast at Penguin.
Eisteddfod Success
Week 8 has seen 12 SHS students competing across five different sections of Speech and Drama in the Burnie Eisteddfod. Blayze and Lucas claimed first place for mimes in their sections, while Matilda and Milly came first in the Year 7 duologues.
Everyone gave their best and had a wonderful experience both through performing and through watching other performers. Well done!
Outdoor Education
The Outdoor Ed students went out to explore the Stanley Nut. They recognised different cardinal points along their walk.
The Outdoor Ed students conducted a beach clean up on the East Inlet of Stanley recently. Whilst on task, students identified and recognized the tide patterns, swell and wind conditions. Recognising weather patterns are useful skills in outdoor environments.
Health Careers Program
During the term, four Smithton High Year 10 students participated in the Year 10 Health Careers program at the Rural Clinical School Burnie campus, to experience a day in the life of a healthcare worker.
Students responded to emergency scenarios, simulated taking blood tests and blood pressure, deduced a diagnosis based on symptoms and explored diverse health-related career opportunities.
They also heard from Hellyer College staff and students who facilitated a Question Panel about their pre-tertiary subject choices and career aspirations, giving the Year 10s an insight into the many possible pathways in Health they might follow.
Australian Maritime College
Recently our Year 10 students participated in some activities with the Australian Maritime College. Sam and Jess provided an overview of the learning opportunities available at the AMC - from short courses and Certificate I right through to Bachelor degrees, Masters' and PhD's.
A student might start with a short course or a VET Certificate which might lead to work in, say the fishing or tourism industry or they might choose to complete a Bachelor of Global Logistics and Maritime Management and go to work for a ports authority or shipping company. Either of these pathways have the opportunity to take you anywhere in the world!
Our students had the opportunity to try out the ship simulator - a mini version of what's on offer at the AMC campus in Launceston - and participate in a life jacket challenge which was lots of fun.
The AMC is recognised globally as a leading institute in maritime training with students from all around the world coming to Tasmania to further their studies and careers. Thank you to Jess and Sam for coming to Smithton High School. Thanks also to Alli from Beacon Foundation for facilitating the visit.
BIG Freeze Fundraiser
The SEC and SRC hosted our own BIG Freeze to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease, MND. The school raised $72.00. Thank you everyone for your support.
