A Word from the Principal…
I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we dive into the final term of the year, I wanted to touch base with you to share some important updates and reminders.
Term 4 is always a busy term in every school. With a range of exciting end-of-year events and activities planned, there is a lot to look forward to before the holiday break. Our talented students have been working hard throughout the year, focusing on quality learning and our staff have been working hard to ensure our classrooms are calm and orderly which sets the scene for good learning and teaching to occur. We use our newsletter to showcase the achievements of our students and it’s a positive platform to promote our school.
Key Dates:
We are getting ready for end-of-year events. Please mark these dates on your calendars and keep an eye out for further details closer to the time.
Key Notices and Reminders:
1. Leaving Class Passes: Just a gentle reminder that all students are required to have a leaving class pass if they need to leave their class for any reason. This helps to ensure their safety and accountability. We appreciate your cooperation in reinforcing this with your child.
2. Only one student in a toilet at any time: We have a clear expectation that only one student is in a toilet at any time. We have communicated with all families through text message last term our stance on using toilets appropriately and the consequences if they choose not. Our stance on appropriate toilet use, has not changed for this term. We will contact you, if your child does not follow the reasonable expectations around toilet use. Again, we appreciate your cooperation in reinforcing this with your child/ren.
3. The Reset Room: Our dedicated Reset Room continues to be available for students who may need some time to reset and refocus before returning to their class. It's important for our students to have a space where they can regulate and be ready to learn. If you feel your child would benefit from using the Reset Room, please encourage them to talk to their teacher, Year Leader or our Professional Student Support staff.
Lastly, I wanted to share with you the contact information for our school:
Smithton High School - 6452 9222
We encourage you to save this number in case you ever need to reach out to us. We are here to assist you and support your child throughout their educational journey.
Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in your child's education. Together, we can make a positive difference in their lives.
Warm regards,
Nikki Clark
Principal
Celebrating World Teachers’ Day 2023
In celebration of World Teachers’ Day this year, there is a new blog exploring the many positive impacts teachers have on their students not only in the time spent teaching them but the way teachers shape students' development for years to come.
"The teacher-student relationship extends far beyond the classroom. The influence of a teacher who has nurtured a positive bond with a student can persist throughout the student's life. These relationships can shape career choices, personal values, and a lifelong connection to learning."

Youth, Family and Community Connections (YFCC)
2023 Inspiring Youth Awards
This year, nine students from Smithton High School were nominated for the YFCC 2023 Inspiring Youth Awards. The award categories included High 5, Quiet Achiever and Great Mate. Some of SHS students and Mrs Owen were able to attend the prestigious award ceremony in Devonport during the school holidays. Each student nomination was shared and celebrated with the large crowd of 200. There were many amazing and worthy winners from across the North-West Coast. SHS would like to congratulate the following students for being nominated. Quiet Achiever: Jayda and Jorja. Great Mate: Nardia, Luca, Maddie, Fletcher, Chloe, Lucy and Ethan.
Year 10 Haiku Poems
We tried different snacks and wrote down adjectives to describe the taste, smell, look, feel and sound. We used these words to write our Haiku poems.
Outdoor Ed Visits Cape Grim
Students enjoyed the view of Doughboys, exploring caves and searching rock pools for sea life. They were also lucky enough to learn about the life of the traditional owners of the land, through CHAC’s Camilla and Danieka.
Visual Art
Throughout the year, our Year 9/10 Visual Art students have completed a range of outstanding canvases. Many of these paintings were entered in the Circular Head CHarts Festival and now decorate the school’s foyer.
The paintings have been executed in a range of media including watercolour, acrylic paint, and paint pens. The subject of the paintings are varied in genre and subject. From rock posters and album covers to images of fantasy and surrealism.
Presently, the students are investigating images of war from Ancient Egypt and Rome to the fields in Flanders and the numerous public memorials that pay respect to the fallen.
Wyndarra Christmas Hampers
This year our students are helping Wyndarra with the community Christmas hampers. Last year Wyndarra helped distribute hampers and supported approximately 508 people within our community. Students are asking for your support to help by donating the following items:
- Canned foods
- Baby goods
- Sanitary items/toiletries
- Other non-perishable food items
We are also looking for donations of good condition preloved baby clothes for families in need. Students will wash, if needed, and donate to Wyndarra for distribution.
Drop off point for donations is located at the school main office. Thank you for your support.
Year 7 Drama
Students in the Year 7 Drama Option in Term 4 are eagerly working towards our first production in a few years—a small-scale vignette play we will be performing in Week 9. Watch this space!
