A Word from the Principal…

NAPLAN, MLYP and Student Free day

We have been unpacking the NAPLAN results for our Year 7 and 9 cohorts over the last few weeks in staff development meetings and with our School Association. It is pleasing to see solid gains in both the Year 7 and 9 results. We can certainly see a strong correlation to the work the cluster has completed during the MYLP and the positive impact this has had on our NAPLAN results. Whilst the MYLP is coming to an end, it is vitally important we continue to build on the momentum of the project. A commitment from all principals to continue to work together as a cluster in 2020 has been agreed upon and planning is underway - further information will be communicated once the finer details are confirmed. It is exciting to be able to continue our collaboration as a collective to benefit all of our students in Circular Head. Well done to everybody involved in the MYLP and a very special thanks to Professor Bev and Toni Popowski for your contribution to the project over the last three years.

The student free day provided an opportunity for the cluster to come together to celebrate the end of the MYLP. Teachers shared their learning through presentations, videos and discussions. The Vault was officially launched and the resource centre holds a significant amount of work which has been completed throughout the project. The Vault is a fabulous resource and we are exceptionally lucky to have access to it. At Smithton High our Year 9 and 10 teachers participated in moderation activities. Moderation allows our staff to collaborate and look at student achievement by assessing samples of student work. This process ensures we are assessing student work accurately across all learning areas, year groups and classes.

End of Year Information for Parents/Carers

A timely reminder for all parents and carers as we move towards the end of the year, there is usually lots of correspondence from the school to assist with the organisation of end of year activities. Please respond promptly to any notices, permission slips or letters from the school, as this greatly assists our office staff with organisation and preparation for the last month of the school year. Information about upcoming school events is always posted on the school Facebook page, but if you are unsure of anything, or if your contact details have changed, please don’t hesitate to contact the main office on 6452 9222.

Chaplaincy News

Fourth term is well and truly in full swing, with some busy weeks ahead. For chaplaincy the vast majority of this year has continued to involve a high level of pastoral care as I have been invited to support students as they navigate life and all its challenges. As always I consider this a privilege and never take for granted the trust given to me by students as I walk alongside them.

Programs such as CHIC and the STARS program continue to be great avenues of encouraging our young people to become aware of and celebrate their value and uniqueness, and to assist them to develop life skills that will benefit them now and into their futures.

A highlight last week was being invited to be part of the 50th year celebrations for Meals on Wheels. This function was held at the CH Recreation centre, and a hundred guests gathered to recognise the worth and longevity of this valuable service to the residents of Circular Head. A group of delegates representing staff and students attended this event, in which Smithton High was recognised for 10 years of service to Meals on Wheels.

This reminded me again that educating our young people is so much bigger than just providing an academic education. By participating in this program over many years it reminds us all that an important quality of a life well lived which provides purpose and meaning is giving in ways that often require some form of sacrifice, but in doing so, we and those we assist, are enriched.
